Understanding Offset & Backspacing

Wheel offset is a number, either positive or negative, that determines the distance between the wheel’s center-line and the mounting surface or back pad of the wheel. There are a lot of variables in choosing the right offset for your Silverado 1500; such as clearance. When you’re mounting an aftermarket wheel, you want to ensure that the wheel isn’t rubbing or scrubbing against the fender, fender liner or any part of the suspension when at full lock to either side or when in the neutral position.

In short, there are three different offsets: positive, zero and negative. Positive offset is when the wheel is sitting closer to the suspension, zero is dead center, and negative offset is when the wheel is further away from the suspension.

Chevy Silverado 1500 Wheels: Fitments

Below you’ll see all of the fitments Hardrock Offroad recommends for your Silverado 1500 from generations 1 to 4, as they all share similar chassis’. Please note that some of these fitments may require modifications such as trimming, cutting and in most cases suspensions lifts. However, we’ve done our best to only include fitments that require none or very little modifications. The only exception to this list is that your truck will require a lift kit to run anything more aggressive than 20×10 in most situations depending on the trucks trim level and factory suspension lift.

Wheel Construction

In recent years, new types of wheel construction have been introduced into the off-road wheel market. In addition to offset, backspacing and aesthetic considerations, now you can choose what type of wheel construction you prefer. The most common type of wheels are cast wheels. As the name suggests, cast wheels are molded using molten aluminum. The next step up are flow formed wheels, which follow the same process as cast wheels, except the barrel has been spun, stretched and compressed to shape. Then there are forged wheels, which are completely machined from one block of aluminum. There are benefits and disadvantage to all three types of wheels, however most off-road trucks, Jeeps and SUVs utilize cast wheels.

Frequently asked questions

All Silverado 1500s from 1999 to present use a 6x139.7mm bolt pattern. This has been consistent across all generations, so you've got plenty of aftermarket wheel options. The lug nuts are 14mm x 1.5 thread pitch. Don't get this confused with the HD trucks - those run an 8-lug pattern.

Most newer Silverados can fit 33" tires with just a leveling kit. Stock height usually maxes out around 285/75R18 or 295/70R18 without rubbing. The newer body styles have more room in the wheel wells than older generations, so fitting bigger rubber is easier.

Factory offset is around +24 to +31mm. Most aftermarket setups run between -12 to +18mm offset for a more aggressive look. Going too negative can cause rubbing issues on the upper control arms or inner fender wells. Stick between -12 to +20mm for best results.

You'll need at least a 4" lift for 35" tires on most Silverados. A 6" lift gives you plenty of clearance for 35x12.5 tires without trimming. Some guys run 35s on a 2.5" level with minor trimming, but a proper lift is the way to go.

The bolt pattern is the same, but 2019+ trucks have different brake caliper clearance issues. Wheels designed for 18" and smaller may not clear the front calipers on 2019+ models. Always check brake clearance when swapping wheels between generations.

We recommend staying between 17-22" for the best balance of performance and ride quality. Going bigger than 22" starts hurting ride quality and increases the chance of wheel damage off-road. Most serious off-road builds stick with 17-20" wheels for maximum tire sidewall and durability.
