Understanding Offset & Backspacing
Wheel offset is a number, either positive or negative, that determines the distance between the wheel’s center-line and the mounting surface or back pad of the wheel. There are a lot of variables in choosing the right offset for your JT Gladiator; such as clearance. When you’re mounting an aftermarket wheel, you want to ensure that the wheel isn’t rubbing or scrubbing against the fender, fender liner or any part of the suspension when at full lock to either side or when in the neutral position. Fortunately, the Jeep Gladiator is built with off-roading and aftermarket wheel fitment in mind, so there are no major fitment issues. The only time you’ll run into issues is with extreme wheel diamater, width and offset specs.
In short, there are three different offsets: positive, zero and negative. Positive offset is when the wheel is sitting closer to the suspension, zero is dead center, and negative offset is when the wheel is further away from the suspension.
Jeep Gladitator Wheels: Fitments
Below you’ll see all the fitments Hardrock Offroad recommends for your Gladiaor JT. Please note that some of these fitments may require a suspension lift to some degree, depending on your choice of tire size. In some extreme cases and tire sizes, fender modifications are required to fit bigger tires and wheels with large diameters and widths.
None of the Gladiator’s came with factory suspensions lifts; all suspension lifts are typically dealer-installed options. Be sure to check what kind of suspension your Gladiator has before purchasing a new set of wheels.
That said, even though you can technically fit 37’s on a stock Gladiator, you still need to account for suspension articulation if you plan on off-roading. If you want to avoid lifting your Jeep all together, we strongly suggest sticking to 33″ tires or less as it’s the safest no-mod fitment.
Wheel Size & Offset | Suggested Tire Sizes |

Wheel Construction
In recent years, new types of wheel construction have been introduced into the off-road wheel market. In addition to offset, backspacing and aesthetic considerations, now you can choose what type of wheel construction you prefer. The most common type of 4×4 wheels are cast wheels. As the name suggests, cast wheels are molded using molten aluminum. The next step up are flow formed wheels, which follow the same process as cast wheels, except the barrel has been spun, stretched and compressed to shape. Then there are forged wheels, which are completely machined from one block of aluminum. There are benefits and disadvantage to all three types of wheels, however most off-road trucks, Jeeps and SUVs utilize cast wheels.

Frequently asked questions
Can I run 17 inch wheels on my Gladiator instead of the factory 18s or 20s?
Absolutely. We actually recommend 17 inch wheels for most Gladiator owners. You get way more tire options, better sidewall protection for off-road use, and typically save money on both wheels and tires. The larger factory wheels look nice, but 17s deliver better performance where it counts.
What wheel offset should I choose for my Gladiator JT?
For most applications, we recommend staying between +1 to -25 offset. This range gives you the aggressive look you want without major rubbing issues. Going more negative creates a wider stance but can stress suspension components. Our wheels in this range work perfectly with both stock and lifted Gladiators.
What's the largest tire I can fit without a lift kit?
On a stock Gladiator, you can typically fit 35x12.5 tires with the right wheel setup. Rubicon models handle this better due to their wider fender flares and different suspension geometry. Sport and Overland models might need minor trimming or fender modifications for completely rub-free operation during full articulation.
Will my new wheels and tires rub when off-roading?
With proper sizing, rubbing should be minimal. We test all our fitment recommendations in real-world conditions. Some light contact during extreme articulation is normal and won't damage anything. If you're planning serious rock crawling, consider a small lift kit for maximum clearance and peace of mind.
Do different Gladiator trim levels affect wheel fitment?
Yes, definitely. Rubicon models have wider axles, raised fender flares, and slightly different suspension that accommodates larger tires better. Sport and Overland models can fit the same combinations but might require minor modifications. The Max Tow package also provides wider axles that help with fitment.
Should I upgrade my wheels when installing larger tires?
Yes, especially if you're going to 35-inch or larger tires. Factory wheels often have too much positive offset for aggressive tire sizes. Our purpose-built wheels provide the correct offset and width to properly support larger tires while maintaining optimal handling and preventing premature tire wear.
