Understanding Offset & Backspacing
Wheel offset is a number, either positive or negative, that determines the distance between the wheel’s center-line and the mounting surface or back pad of the wheel. There are a lot of variables in choosing the right offset for your Tacoma; such as clearance. When you’re mounting an aftermarket wheel, you want to ensure that the wheel isn’t rubbing or scrubbing against the fender, fender liner or any part of the suspension when at full lock to either side or when in the neutral position. One of the most common clearance issues FJ Cruiser drivers face is rubbing on the plastic fender liners, OEM mud flaps and in extreme cases, suspension components.
In short, there are three different offsets: positive, zero and negative. Positive offset is when the wheel is sitting closer to the suspension, zero is dead center, and negative offset is when the wheel is further away from the suspension.
Toyota FJ Cruiser Wheels: Fitments
Below you’ll see all of the fitments Hardrock Offroad recommends for your Toyota FJC. Please note that most of these fitments will require a suspension lift to some degree, depending entirely on your choice of tire size. In some extreme cases and tire sizes, fender modifications are required to fit wheels and tires.
For an easy to understand reference point, here’s what we suggest when selecting tire size:
33″ Tires: 2-3″ Suspension Lift
35″ Tires: 3.5″+ Suspension Lift
37″ Tires: 4-6″+ Suspension Lift
It’s also important to note that most FJC owners compliment suspension lifts with body lifts as well.

Wheel Construction
In recent years, new types of wheel construction have been introduced into the off-road wheel market. In addition to offset, backspacing and aesthetic considerations, now you can choose what type of wheel construction you prefer. The most common type of wheels are cast wheels. As the name suggests, cast wheels are molded using molten aluminum. The next step up are flow formed wheels, which follow the same process as cast wheels, except the barrel has been spun, stretched and compressed to shape. Then there are forged wheels, which are completely machined from one block of aluminum. There are benefits and disadvantage to all three types of wheels, however most off-road trucks, Jeeps and SUVs utilize cast wheels.

Frequently asked questions
Will wheels from other Toyota vehicles fit my FJ Cruiser?
Yes, absolutely! Toyota FJ Cruiser wheels are compatible with several other Toyota models including the 4Runner, Tacoma, and even some older Tundra and Land Cruiser models. The key is that they all share the same 6x139.7mm bolt pattern. We've seen countless customers successfully run 4Runner TRD wheels, Tacoma TRD wheels, and even newer model wheels on their FJs without any issues. Toyota has been pretty consistent with their wheel fitment across their truck and SUV lineup, which makes finding compatible wheels much easier for FJ owners.
What's the bolt pattern for Toyota FJC wheels?
Your Toyota FJ Cruiser uses a 6x139.7mm bolt pattern, which is the same as 6x5.5 inches. This means you have six lug holes spaced exactly 139.7 millimeters apart in a circle. This bolt pattern has been Toyota's standard for their trucks and SUVs for years, so you'll have plenty of wheel options to choose from. Just make sure any aftermarket Toyota FJ Cruiser wheels you're considering match this exact specification for a proper, safe fit.
What wheel size works best for off-roading with my FJ?
For serious off-roading, We always recommend going with 17 inch Toyota FJ Cruiser wheels. Most off-road focused FJ packages came with 17 inch wheels from the factory for exactly this reason. While 18 inch and larger wheels might look great, they reduce your tire sidewall height and make off-road driving much rougher on both you and your wheels.
What are the stock offset and backspacing specs for FJ wheels?
The factory Toyota FJC wheels typically have an offset between +15mm and +20mm, with a backspacing around 4.84 inches. These specifications work well for daily driving and light off-roading. If you're planning to run wider tires or want a more aggressive stance for serious trail use, you might want to consider wheels with slightly less offset, but be aware that significant changes could require modifications like a body mount chop to prevent rubbing issues.
What's the minimum wheel size I can run on my FJ Cruiser?
The minimum wheel size for your Toyota FJ Cruiser is 16 inches. This limitation comes from the brake caliper clearance - anything smaller than 16 inches won't clear the brake components properly. Some other off-road vehicles can run 15 inch wheels, but the FJ's brake system design requires at least 16 inches. This is actually why Toyota offered 16 inch wheels on their more off-road oriented FJ packages, as smaller wheels generally perform better for technical trail driving.
Do I need wheel spacers with aftermarket Toyota FJ Cruiser wheels?
Whether you need wheel spacers depends on your specific wheel and tire combination. Many FJ owners running wider tires like 285s find that 1.25-inch wheel spacers help clear the upper control arms and provide better fitment. Spidertrax 1.25-inch spacers are pretty much the community standard and work great. However, if you choose your wheel offset correctly from the start, you can often avoid needing spacers altogether. The trade-off is that pushing your wheels outward with spacers increases the likelihood you'll need to do a body mount chop to prevent rubbing at the body mounts.
