Toyota Tacoma Wheel Fitment Guide
The legendary Toyota Tacoma, a cornerstone in the midsize pickup segment since 1995, continues to captivate trail enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers with its proven capability and rugged DNA. Like any serious off-road machine, many Tacoma owners prioritize wheel and tire upgrades to enhance their truck’s trail-conquering abilities.
The current Tacoma generation comes in several distinctive trims, including the formidable TRD Pro and trail-ready TRD Off-Road, each featuring its own specific wheel and tire configurations. However, for those seeking to maximize their rig’s potential, upgrading to a 17-inch or 20-inch wheel package can transform both capability and aesthetics.
In this detailed fitment guide, we’ll explore the extensive testing and validation performed by Hardrock Offroad to ensure your Tacoma receives wheels that deliver both head-turning style and genuine off-road performance. Whether you’re maintaining a subtle OEM+ appearance with the factory suspension or planning an aggressive build with increased lift height, this fitment guide will walk you through selecting the perfect set of Toyota Tacoma wheels.

Understanding Offset & Backspacing
Wheel offset is a number, either positive or negative, that determines the distance between the wheel’s center-line and the mounting surface or back pad of the wheel. There are a lot of variables in choosing the right offset for your Tacoma; such as clearance. When you’re mounting an aftermarket wheel, you want to ensure that the wheel isn’t rubbing or scrubbing against the fender, fender liner or any part of the suspension when at full lock to either side or when in the neutral position. One of the most common clearance issues Tacoma drivers face is rubbing on the plastic fender liners, OEM mud flaps and in extreme cases, suspension components.
In short, there are three different offsets: positive, zero and negative. Positive offset is when the wheel is sitting closer to the suspension, zero is dead center, and negative offset is when the wheel is further away from the suspension.
Toyota Tacoma Wheels: Fitments
Below you’ll see all of the fitments Hardrock Offroad recommends for your Toyota Tacoma from all generations, as they share very similar chassis’. Please note that some of these fitments may require modifications such as trimming and cutting. However, we’ve done our best to only include fitments that require none or very little modifications. The only exception to this list is the Gen 1 and Gen 2 Tacoma’s will have trouble fitting anything larger than a 17″ wheel without body panel modifications or an extreme lift kit.

Wheel Construction
In recent years, new types of wheel construction have been introduced into the off-road wheel market. In addition to offset, backspacing and aesthetic considerations, now you can choose what type of wheel construction you prefer. The most common type of wheels are cast wheels. As the name suggests, cast wheels are molded using molten aluminum. The next step up are flow formed wheels, which follow the same process as cast wheels, except the barrel has been spun, stretched and compressed to shape. Then there are forged wheels, which are completely machined from one block of aluminum. There are benefits and disadvantage to all three types of wheels, however most off-road trucks, Jeeps and SUVs utilize cast wheels.

Frequently asked questions
What does wheel offset mean and what's best for my Toyota Tacoma?
Wheel offset is the distance between the wheel's centerline and the mounting surface, measured in millimeters. For Toyota Tacomas, we recommend a zero offset for a balanced look and performance. Positive offset (like +25) places the wheel closer to the suspension components, while negative offset (like -12) pushes the wheel further outward from the truck. Many Tacoma owners prefer slight negative offsets for that aggressive stance, but remember that extreme negative offsets can cause rubbing issues and may require modifications. At Hardrock Offroad, our most popular Tacoma wheels range from +1 to -19 offset, depending on your desired look and functionality.
What's the bolt pattern for Toyota Tacomas?
The bolt pattern for Tacoma models varies by generation. First and second generation Tacomas (1995-2011) use a 5×114.3mm bolt pattern, while third and fourth generation models (2016-present) use a 6×139.7mm pattern. The hub bore size has also changed for the 2024-2025 models to 95.1mm, compared to the previous 106.1mm in earlier third-gen models. This is crucial information when selecting wheels, as the correct bolt pattern ensures proper fitment and safety.
What's the largest tire size I can fit on my stock Tacoma?
On a stock third-generation Tacoma without any rubbing or trimming, the largest tire you can fit is a 265/75 on a 16-inch wheel or a 265/70 on a 17-inch wheel. These sizes provide a modest increase in ground clearance and off-road capability without requiring modifications to your truck. If you're looking for even larger tires, a suspension lift will be necessary. With a 4-inch lift, you could potentially fit up to a 33-inch tall tire (about 285/75) with minor trimming required.
Which wheel and tire combinations work best for off-roading?
For serious off-road performance, we recommend our 17×9 wheels with either +1 or -12 offset paired with 33×12.50R17LT or 285/70R17 tires. These combinations provide excellent ground clearance, traction, and durability for trail use. If you prefer a more aggressive stance and larger wheel diameter, our 20×9 wheels with 0 offset paired with 33×12.50R20LT or 285/60R20 tires deliver both performance and style. We've thoroughly tested these fitments on various Tacoma generations to ensure they work properly with minimal or no modifications required.
Do I need to modify my Tacoma to fit aftermarket wheels?
It depends on the wheel and tire combination you choose. With proper offset selection, many aftermarket wheels can be installed without modifications. For instance, our Hardrock Offroad wheels in 17×9 with +1 offset or 20×9 with 0 offset typically fit without major modifications on third-generation Tacomas. However, more aggressive setups with extreme negative offsets or very large tires may require trimming of fender liners, cab mount modifications (CMC), or other adjustments. We've carefully selected our recommended fitments to minimize the need for extensive modifications while still achieving the look and performance you want.
Can I use the same wheels across different Tacoma generations?
While the third and fourth generation Tacomas (2016-present) share the same 6×139.7mm bolt pattern, earlier generations (1995-2011) use a 5×114.3mm pattern, making direct wheel swapping impossible. Additionally, the hub bore size has changed for the 2024-2025 models to 95.1mm from the previous 106.1mm. This means that while the bolt patterns match between third and fourth gens, hub-centric rings may be needed when using third-gen wheels on the newest Tacomas. At Hardrock Offroad, we offer wheels specifically designed for each Tacoma generation to ensure proper fitment and performance.
